Online Slots RTP Guide: What RTP Means, with Published Figures

By James Burke · Updated Oct 15, 2026

What is RTP?

RTP (return to player) is the share of all money wagered on a slot that the game is designed to pay back over a very large number of spins. A 96% RTP game is designed to return $96 for every $100 wagered across all players over the long run; the other 4% is the house edge.

RTP describes the long run, not your session. Every RTP below 100% means the game keeps a share of the money wagered over time, so more spins mean a higher expected loss, not a better chance of coming out ahead. Results in any one session can be far above or below the RTP.

Higher RTP means a smaller house edge, not a win

A 98% RTP game has a 2% house edge; a 94% game has a 6% edge. A higher RTP lowers the expected cost of play. It doesn't make a game "pay" or change the odds of any single spin.

Check the version you're playing. Some providers release the same game at more than one RTP setting, and the casino chooses which to offer. The figure that applies is the one shown in the game's own help or information screen at your casino.

Volatility is a separate measure

Volatility describes how results are spread out: low-volatility games tend to pay smaller amounts more often, high-volatility games pay less often but in larger amounts. Two games with the same RTP can feel very different. Volatility doesn't change the house edge.

RTP and bonuses

If you play with a bonus, the wagering requirement, game weighting and max-bet rule matter far more than small RTP differences. See bonus game weighting explained and wagering requirements explained.
