How progressive jackpots work, and what the odds mean.
On a progressive slot, a share of each bet goes into a jackpot pool. The pool grows with every contributing bet until someone wins it, then starts again from a set starting amount, called the seed. The contribution rate and the seed differ by game. Where they're published, they're in the game's help or information screen; read it before you play.
A local (standalone) progressive is fed only by bets on one game at one casino. A networked (wide-area) progressive is fed by bets on linked games at many casinos, so the pool can grow larger, but many more players are competing for the same prize. Either way, a larger pool doesn't change the odds of winning it on any spin.
A progressive game's published RTP includes the share of each bet that goes to the jackpot. The regular game (line wins and features) returns less than that total, and the jackpot share is paid back only to the rare player who wins it. For most players, most of the time, the return they actually experience is the base-game part.
The jackpot's contribution to RTP also depends on its current size. Wizard of Odds lists "break-even" jackpot values for some progressives, the size at which a game's return would reach 100% (Wizard of Odds, slots, checked Oct 15, 2026). That's a long-run figure across all players. It doesn't make any single spin more likely to win, and an individual player is very unlikely to see that return.
Each spin is decided by a random number generator, so a jackpot is never "due" because it hasn't paid in a while. Betting patterns, the time of day and switching games don't change the odds. Winning a networked jackpot is a very rare event. Treat any money spent chasing one as the cost of entertainment, not as a plan to win.
Some games tie the jackpot, or the chance of triggering it, to your bet size, and others don't. The rules differ by game and can differ between versions, so check the game's help screen. A rule that favours bigger bets is not a reason to bet more than your limit.
